The Grand Rapids economy
Manufacturing is the largest sector in the Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood metro at 20.7% of metro GDP, followed by health care at 9.1%, wholesale trade at 8.0% and retail at 6.3%. A June 2024 HUD market profile puts manufacturing at 19% of all jobs and notes that the city, historically known as America's Furniture City, now also supports automotive, industrial and medical equipment manufacturing. The City of Grand Rapids adds metals, plastics, biopharmaceuticals and food processing, and says about 80% of West Michigan manufacturers employ fewer than 250 people.
HUD lists Corewell Health (25,000 employees), Meijer (10,350) and Mercy Health (8,500) as the three largest employers, with manufacturers holding five of the top ten spots, and reports $260 million in new Corewell outpatient facilities in Kent County. Wholesale has real weight too: Gordon Food Service runs its headquarters campus in Wyoming. Banking is mostly regional, with Mercantile Bank Corporation headquartered in Grand Rapids.
Figures cover the Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood, MI metro area as the Census Bureau defines it.

Common CRM challenges in Grand Rapids
Dealer and distributor channels
Manufacturers sell through many dealers with their own hierarchies and pricing. Account models and permissions need to reflect that.
ERP at the center
Order, pricing and inventory data live in the ERP. The CRM has to read from it without becoming a second source of truth.
Health system data rules
Large health systems need strict access control. Protected information should stay out of marketing tools and AI prompts.

Grand Rapids questions, answered
We make products sold through dealers in West Michigan. How should the CRM be organized?
Around the dealer hierarchy: parent dealer groups, locations, contacts, pricing tiers and territories, with quotes and orders linked to each. Sales Cloud handles this, Experience Cloud can add a dealer portal, and your ERP stays the system of record, connected through APIs or MuleSoft. We confirm each connection in discovery. A typical implementation runs 10-16 weeks. Discovery focuses on which dealer data needs to be visible to whom.
Can HubSpot serve a mid-sized distributor?
Often yes for marketing, lead routing and quote follow-up. HubSpot Marketing Hub and Sales Hub can be live in 4-8 weeks. If you need complex pricing, dealer portals or deep ERP data in the CRM, Salesforce is the stronger fit. We recommend one based on your team size, systems and plans. Many distributors begin with HubSpot for marketing and add Salesforce later.
Where does AI help a manufacturer?
Mostly in document and service work: summarizing specs and quotes, routing and answering routine dealer questions, and preparing sales meetings. Claude or Agentforce works within tight permissions, and a person reviews anything customer-facing. We check data quality first, because AI on messy account data gives messy answers. Our AI readiness assessment offers a short start. Many teams start with one service workflow before expanding. That review step is part of every rollout we run.
