Super Intelligence (SI)

Also known as: SI, the US federal term for AI

Short answer

Super Intelligence (SI) is the term the US federal government has used for artificial intelligence (AI) since Executive Order 14434, signed September 29, 2026. It covers the same technologies as the legal definition of AI, so SI and AI describe the same thing. Federal agencies must use SI; private companies choose their own terms.

Super Intelligence (SI) explained

The order directs executive departments and agencies to say "Super Intelligence" and "SI" instead of "artificial intelligence" and "AI" in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports and policy documents. It defines SI as the technologies already covered by the definition of artificial intelligence in 15 U.S.C. 9401(3), and it doesn't change existing regulations, contracts or grants.

Vendors are moving at different speeds. Salesforce renamed AIforce to SIforce on October 9, 2026, while Anthropic, OpenAI and HubSpot still describe their products as AI. In the Salesforce partner world, SI has also long meant systems integrator; on vantagepoint.io, SI means Super Intelligence.

Frequently asked questions

Is SI the same as AI?

Yes, in scope. Executive Order 14434 defines SI as the technologies the US Code already defines as AI. A different definition would need a later order or an act of Congress.

Does the SI order apply to private companies?

No. It applies to federal executive departments and agencies. Companies that work with those agencies will see SI in agency documents and correspondence.
