Short answer
Record types let one Salesforce object support different business processes. Each record type can have its own page layout, picklist values and sales or support process, so a single Case or Opportunity object can handle, for example, account openings, money movement and complaints differently.
Record Types explained
A record type is chosen when a record is created, and it controls which fields and picklist values users see. Combined with profiles or permission sets, record types also decide which users can create which kinds of records. Automation and reports often branch on record type.
Record types are powerful but easy to overuse. If the only difference between two processes is a single value, a picklist field is usually simpler.
How Vantage Point helps: we design object models with the right balance of record types, picklists and dynamic forms, and map legacy data into them during migrations.
Frequently asked questions
When should I use a record type instead of a picklist?
Use a record type when the process, page layout or available values genuinely differ. Use a picklist when you only need to categorize records.
Can I change a record's type later?
Yes, users with permission can change it, but check that required fields and automation still work for the new type.
