Claude Plans and Tiers Explained: Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise for Business

Quick answer: Anthropic offers five Claude subscription plans: Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Free, Pro, and Max are individual plans that differ mainly in usage capacity, while Team and Enterprise add shared workspaces, central billing, single sign-on, and — at the Enterprise level — audit logs, SCIM provisioning, and custom data retention controls. As of August 2026, Pro starts at $17 per month billed annually, Team standard seats start at $20 per seat per month billed annually, and Enterprise is priced at $20 per seat plus usage billed at API rates, per Anthropic's pricing page. For most businesses, the real decision is Team versus Enterprise, and it hinges on governance requirements more than price.

Choosing a Claude plan looks like a pricing exercise, but for a business it is really a governance and adoption decision. The wrong choice usually is not "too expensive" — it is employees quietly using personal Free accounts with company data, outside any admin visibility. This guide walks through each tier, what changes as you move up, and how to decide.

What are the five Claude plans?

Per Anthropic's help center and pricing pages, the current lineup is Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. The first three are individual plans; the last two are business plans with organizational controls. All plans access Anthropic's Claude models — what changes is usage capacity, collaboration features, and administrative control.

  • Free — chat on web, mobile, and desktop, with web search, file creation, and connectors, under the tightest usage limits. Good for evaluation, not for company data.
  • Pro — the everyday individual plan. Adds significantly more usage, unlimited projects, Research, access to more models, and tools such as Claude Code and Claude for Microsoft 365.
  • Max — Pro for power users, with a choice of 5x or 20x Pro's usage, higher output limits, and early access to new features.
  • Team — a shared workspace for teams of roughly 2 to 150, with central billing, admin controls, SSO, and standard or premium seats you can mix and match.
  • Enterprise — everything in Team plus enterprise-grade security and administration: SCIM, audit logs, a compliance API, role-based access, IP allowlisting, custom data retention, and a larger context window on the default model.

How do the plans compare on price and features?

The table below summarizes the lineup as of August 2026, per Anthropic's pricing page (claude.com/pricing). Prices change at Anthropic's discretion, so verify before you commit.

Plan Price (as of August 2026) Best for Key additions
Free $0 Evaluation and light personal use Core chat, web search, connectors; lowest usage limits
Pro $17/month billed annually ($200 up front); $20 monthly Individuals using Claude daily More usage, projects, Research, Claude Code, Microsoft 365 integration
Max From $100/month (choice of 5x or 20x Pro usage) Heavy individual users Higher output limits, priority access, early feature access
Team Standard seat $20/seat/month billed annually ($25 monthly); premium seat $100/seat/month billed annually ($125 monthly) Departments and mid-sized teams Central billing, SSO, admin controls, enterprise search, no model training on your content by default
Enterprise $20/seat/month plus usage at API rates, billed annually Large or regulated organizations SCIM, audit logs, compliance API, role-based access, custom data retention, IP allowlisting, HIPAA-ready offering

One nuance worth flagging: Team premium seats carry roughly 5x the usage of standard seats and are aimed at power users, including heavy Claude Code work. You can mix seat types on one plan, so a ten-person team might run two premium seats for its analysts and eight standard seats for everyone else.

Team vs. Enterprise: which does your business actually need?

This is where most mid-market buyers land, and the honest answer is: it depends on your governance requirements, not your headcount.

Choose Team when:

  • You want predictable per-seat costs with monthly or annual billing.
  • SSO, central billing, and basic admin controls satisfy your IT and security review.
  • Your data-handling obligations are standard commercial confidentiality rather than regulatory frameworks with audit requirements.

Choose Enterprise when:

  • You need audit logs and a compliance API so security teams can monitor usage.
  • You provision users through an identity system and need SCIM plus role-based access.
  • You must set custom data retention windows, restrict network access, or use IP allowlisting.
  • You operate in a regulated industry — Anthropic's pricing page lists a HIPAA-ready offering at this tier.

Note the pricing model difference: Team is a flat per-seat fee with usage limits, while Enterprise pairs a lower seat fee with usage billed at API rates. Enterprise costs scale with how intensively your people use Claude, which rewards deliberate rollout planning. We cover this decision pattern across AI vendors in our guide to enterprise AI tiers.

How do subscription plans differ from API pricing?

Subscriptions cover people using the Claude apps. The Anthropic API is a separate, pay-per-token product for software that calls Claude programmatically — internal tools, customer-facing features, or CRM automations. Per Anthropic's pricing page, API rates vary by model, with cost-saving options such as batch processing and prompt caching.

Most businesses eventually need both: subscriptions for employees, API for systems. They are budgeted differently — seats are predictable operating expense, while API spend behaves like a metered utility that needs monitoring and spend controls. If you are embedding Claude in workflows connected to Salesforce or HubSpot, the API (or a platform integration) is usually the path, while the chat apps serve day-to-day analysis and drafting.

What should you consider when Claude will work alongside CRM data?

If your team will paste customer records into Claude, connect it to your CRM, or build agents on top of it, the plan decision gets more consequential:

  1. Data training posture. Per Anthropic's privacy documentation, commercial plans (Team, Enterprise, API) do not use your content for model training by default. Consumer plans handle training preferences through account settings. If CRM data is involved, a commercial plan is the defensible choice.
  2. Retention controls. Enterprise offers custom data retention — often a requirement when customer PII flows through prompts.
  3. Access hygiene. SSO (Team and above) prevents orphaned accounts when employees leave; SCIM (Enterprise) automates it.
  4. Context window. Enterprise's larger context window on the default model matters if users routinely analyze long documents or large data extracts.
  5. Auditability. If compliance needs to answer "who asked Claude what, using which data," only Enterprise's audit logs and compliance API provide that.

The pattern we see work: pilot with a Team plan in one department, define usage and data-handling policies, then step up to Enterprise when scale or regulatory scrutiny demands it. Frequently asked questions

Do all Claude plans use the same models?

Broadly, yes — the tiers are differentiated by usage capacity, features, and administration rather than by intelligence. Paid plans get access to more models and higher limits, and Enterprise gets a larger context window on the default model, but you are not buying a "smarter Claude" at higher tiers. Verify current model availability on Anthropic's pricing page, since the lineup evolves.

How do Claude's usage limits work?

Per Anthropic's help center, limits reset on a rolling five-hour session window, with weekly limits added on paid plans. Usage across web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code draws from one pool, and consumption depends on conversation length, model choice, and features used. Paid plans can enable usage credits to keep working at standard API rates after hitting a limit.

Is there a minimum number of seats for business plans?

Anthropic's pricing page positions Team for teams of roughly 2 to 150 people, with Enterprise for larger organizations available self-serve or sales-assisted. Seat minimums and terms can change, so confirm current requirements with Anthropic before purchasing.

Can we mix standard and premium seats on a Team plan?

Yes. Anthropic allows mixing seat types within one Team plan, which is the practical way to give power users (heavy analysis or Claude Code work) more capacity without paying premium rates for the whole team.

Should a small business start with Pro accounts or a Team plan?

If more than one person will use Claude for work, start with Team. Individual Pro accounts leave billing fragmented, provide no admin visibility, and complicate offboarding. Team's annual per-seat price is comparable to Pro's monthly price, and you gain SSO, central administration, and the default commercial data-handling posture.
