API-Led Connectivity

Short answer

API-led connectivity is an integration approach, popularized by MuleSoft, that organizes APIs into three layers: system APIs that unlock core systems, process APIs that combine data and business logic, and experience APIs that serve specific apps or channels. It makes integrations reusable instead of one-off.

API-Led Connectivity explained

In a point-to-point setup, every new connection is built from scratch, and changes to one system can break many integrations. With API-led connectivity, a system API wraps each back-end system once. Process APIs reuse those system APIs to implement business processes such as "onboard a client", and experience APIs shape data for a portal, mobile app or AI agent.

The result is faster delivery of new projects and less breakage when a system is replaced.

How Vantage Point helps: we design API-led architectures on MuleSoft sized to a firm's real roadmap, not a theoretical one.

Frequently asked questions

Is API-led connectivity overkill for small firms?

It can be. For one or two simple integrations, a direct connector may be enough. The approach pays off as the number of systems and projects grows.

What are the three API layers?

System APIs (access to core systems), process APIs (business logic and orchestration) and experience APIs (data shaped for a specific channel or app).
