Short answer
Salesforce Shield is a set of add-on security tools for Salesforce: Platform Encryption for data at rest, Event Monitoring for detailed user activity logs, Field Audit Trail for long-term field history, and Data Detect for finding sensitive data. Regulated firms use it to meet encryption, monitoring and retention requirements.
Salesforce Shield explained
Platform Encryption encrypts selected standard and custom fields, files and attachments at rest, with options to manage your own keys. Event Monitoring records logins, report exports, API calls and page views so security teams can spot unusual behaviour. Field Audit Trail keeps field history for up to ten years, well beyond the standard history retention. Data Detect scans for sensitive data such as account numbers sitting in unexpected fields.
Shield is licensed separately, and encryption in particular needs design work because it affects search, sorting and some features.
How Vantage Point helps: we scope which Shield components a firm actually needs and configure them alongside access controls and audit reporting.
Frequently asked questions
Does Salesforce encrypt data without Shield?
Yes. Salesforce encrypts data in transit and at rest at the infrastructure level. Shield Platform Encryption adds field-level encryption with key management you control.
Is Shield required for SEC or FINRA compliance?
No regulation names Shield specifically, but its encryption, monitoring and audit features are a common way to meet security and record-keeping expectations.
