Email Subscription Types and Suppression Lists

Also known as: Preference center, suppression list

Short answer

Subscription types let contacts choose which kinds of email they receive, such as newsletters, event invitations or product updates, and opt out of one without opting out of all. Suppression lists hold addresses that must never be emailed, such as unsubscribes and hard bounces.

Email Subscription Types and Suppression Lists explained

HubSpot, Salesforce and Braze each store opt-out status differently. When you migrate between platforms or run several at once, opt-outs must be carried over and synced, or you risk emailing people who unsubscribed. A preference center lets contacts manage their choices in one place.

Honoring opt-outs is a legal requirement under CAN-SPAM and stricter consent rules in the UK and EU.

How Vantage Point helps: we migrate and sync subscription preferences across platforms and build preference centers.

Frequently asked questions

Does unsubscribing from one newsletter stop all emails?

Not necessarily. With subscription types, a contact can opt out of one type and keep others, unless they choose to unsubscribe from all.

How do I keep opt-outs when switching email platforms?

Export unsubscribes, bounces and preferences from the old platform and import them before the first send from the new one.
