Data Mapping Document

Also known as: Field mapping

Short answer

A data mapping document is the field-by-field plan for a migration or integration. It lists each source field, the target object and field it maps to, any transformation rules, and the owner who signs it off. It is the single most important deliverable in a CRM migration.

Data Mapping Document explained

A good mapping document covers objects, fields, data types, picklist value translations, record types, default values, deduplication rules and what is deliberately left behind. It also records external IDs used to link records and the order in which objects load. Business owners sign off before any production load.

Most migration surprises trace back to a field that was never mapped or a picklist value nobody translated.

How Vantage Point helps: we build mapping workbooks with your team, get sign-off, and use them to drive test and production loads.
